This specialist portal addresses all members of staff both of official authorities as well as of commercial enterprises. It can help them to implement legal requirements, assess safety-relevant issues, and support both national as well as international collaboration within committees designed for setting rules and standards.
Furthermore, this specialist portal is designed to provide interested members of the public with more advanced information about the various issues involved in the field of "Public-Technical Safety - Dangerous Substances / Dangerous Goods".
The term "Public-Technical Safety" refers to the state's responsibility for the safety of its citizens in view of the risks emanating from research and development activities in the field of natural science and engineering, and particularly from the application of the results and engineering implementation of these efforts such as technical products, plants, processes and systems - see also Tasks and role of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in ensuring technical and public safety (pdf, 140 KB).
Besides the field of dangerous substances / dangerous goods, public engineering safety is also concerned with the safety of buildings and building components as well as with damage analysis. The field of dangerous substances / dangerous goods is particularly concerned with transport safety and plant safety as well as with preventive measures against the occurrence of incidents and the protection of health and safety standards at work, environmental protection and consumer protection.
The BAM makes available some of this information itself. Furthermore, the portal refers the user to further information pools offered by national and international authorities, commercial enterprises and institutions.
By further expanding this offering of information, the intention is to progress step by step to develop this portal into an information node. All interested parties are called up to contribute ideas and suggestions on how this offering of information can be developed further.
This specialist portal was started up on 1 September 2003. It is operated and maintained by the BAM Working Group "Information Management - Technical and Public Safety".
